fog horn mondeo
Discussion
hi
my parents have a V reg mondeo v6.
thing is in this cold weather, when you start the car up there is a noise like a fog horn and it hunts for revs and sometimes cuts out.
this noise may come from the air box.
it does vibrate a lot.
my mechanic has looked, but has ruled out the airbox.
the noise happens when the air is cold. it doesnt matter how warm/hot the engine is.
when you take it out of gear at the lights(auto box) the noise starts.
has anyone had this before?
could any one recommend another mechanic in the brighton/sussex area?
Thanks & Happy New Year

If I recall correctly this was a known concern on Mondeo V6 - referred to as "moosing" (sounds like a moose) by the engineers involved. I believe the fix was related to the dirty side air intake, a revised resonator or something. A decent Ford dealer should know about it. If you have no luck I can try to find out more when I'm back at work.
Good luck

Yep, do a search for moosing as has been suggested.
The hunting around at idle is probably the idle control valve. You can buy a new one if you want or thoroughly clean it with carb cleaner and it will be fine. Ours started hunting at idle at 60K and I fixed it by cleaning the idle control valve and it's still fine at 110K although admittedly I've cleaned it twice now.

It definitely sounds like Moosing to me. Ford did make a revised intake, but there is some doubt as to it's effectiveness in the long term. It is always satisfying to give the inlet a good clean anyway
Basically it is an air resonance caused by the plastic in the inlet duct stiffening as the plastics lose the plasticiser.

What is moosing?
Moosing is when you can hear a loud foghorn type noise coming from the bonnet.
When does moosing occur?
. When the air temp is cold
. When the car has just been started from cold
Extra loads on the engine can cause it:-
. A/C(depending on ambient temp as it won't work below 5 degrees)
. Moving the steering wheel, switching the heated (front) screen on.
Price: £11.99
