I am considering the diesel version of the Mondeo ST as a company car. Seems to have a bit more luxury probably more show that go, any thoughts either way? Thanks guys.

The 2.2 tdCi engine isn't a bad lump and with 150Ps it shuffles along quite well and can still turn in 500 miles to a tank

The rest of the vehicle is tried and tested but is coming to the end of it's service life now.

Still a better drive than the vectra imho and better value than a VW/Audi

Just had mine delivered on Wed of this week, Silver ST tdci, came into this from a series of Audi A4's, saloon/avant x2 130 tdi then 140tdi, all purchased new, and my initial impression is favourable, still only at 500 miles so hard to tell but it feels quicker than either Audi engine, the handling is miles better as is the ride, more space in boot (than the avant had) and rear legroom is much improved.

Lots of toys as std (mp3 socket, auto light, auot wipers, auto dimming rearview mirror)

Downside - quality of some materials not upto Audi (plastic around ashtray area etc, reliability etc time will tell, this is a co car so not worried about depreciation.

Super market trolleys handle better than my vectra , but with roughly 190bhp from a 1.9 diesel lump it makes for a bit of fun , the mondeo dosent have the toys or technology of the vectra but it is a fantastic handling car even now its coming to the end of its life , still kick myself for not getting one banghead

I recently bought a 6 month old one and was a bit dubious after being used to a petrol v6 but i have to say it is a really nice car to drive. It has plenty of torque and has a really smooth 6 speed gearbox.

just reviving this thread a bit.
One caught my eye this morning, and, as the Golf lease is almost up, and ive been looking for another performance diesel, I deciided to investigate further.

The spec seems quite good, and second hand values very reasonable for the trim level.
anyone got any horror storys ?
Im seeing 6 month old 5 doors, ford direct cars for less than £15k and 12 month old ones for £12.5k

Have to comment. Test drove one of the These on the weekend, and I have to say, it has impressed me a lot more than the VAG 2.0 Diesel or my current 1.9 VAG Diesel.

Suspension seemed a little hard but I guess thats why its listed as a sporty model.

Anyway, thumbs up. Now to get the finance sorted.

I have one of these but in Ghia trim so can't comment on the handling. However, I think the engine is very good. The last one I had was a 130ps and these pulls stronger. It's quieter and smoother. The only thing is I was suprised about the fuel economy. I could get 750 miles out of a tank on my 130ps but can't get past 550 on this one with the the same elderly nun style of driving.

I can report on few items with my ST.
Its an 05 model and has 45K miles on it now.
I drive it 430+ miles to Aberdeen for work (7 to 11 hours, stops and traffic dependant).
On these long runs 47+mpg is good but the 6th is a bit long geared for some of the hils which is why its more economical to not use cruise control.
The unit is quite noisey and easily stalled when cold.
The tyres can be expensive and the ride is a bit firm on the back roads.
Its a great mile muncher but in hind sight I would choose the 2.0L 130PS over 2.2L 155PS next time. For the reason of MPG. As when at home and doing the standard runs for shopping etc the ride and 41MPG put a slight downer on the car.
The motor does pull very well but has a narrow band and can easily reach the limiter in the lower gears.
The trim is generally holding up well but the leather on the handbrake is comming off and the drivers A piller plastic is starting to fall off.
General 8.8/10 overall for the car.

That narrow band is irritating and is partly due to the "transient over boost". The new 2.0 TDCI (136bhp) focus has the same but to a lesser extent. I still havent figured out whether the quickest acceleration is acheived by thrashing it to the red line in all gears or by changing at just above 3k and using the torque instead. Doing this seems to get to 5th too quickly, and then the acceleration is a bit ghey.
once the roads dry out Ill have to time some runs somewhere.

having been driving it for a few months now, I find the 6 speed box is slightly annoying. The ratios arent right. 6th is way too long to be useful for anything. The car barely accelerates in 6th, and best economy is seems to be in 5th Ive found.
3rd and 4th are good but 1st and 2nd are pants for pulling away quickly. 1st is too short, 1st to 2nds change is well past the useful power in 2nd, but 2nd is a bit too long to pull away quickly without serously abusing the clutch.

The 2.2 TDCI engine may have enough grunt to make 6th useful though

It will be interesting to see. I really am going to miss my Golf TDI-130 with its 6 speed box.
The 6th gear and the motorway cruise control was what attracted me to the car in the first place.
I plan on keeping the car for 3 years and will probably put 60,000+ miles on it. Ford have given me a 2 year extended warrenty so im not too worried.

As long as I can get 50mpg on a run, and 40+mpg around town and on the A/B Roads, I'll not be too disappointed.
I have also looked at a BlueFin Chip / remap as an option if 6th gear isnt capable enough as this was the best thing about the VAG 130 engine ... it would quite happily pull from 30mph all the way in 6th.

3 days until delivery

Still wish i had got a mondeo over the vectra ah well live and learn , although the vectra had got around 190ish bhp and will drop its arse if you accelerate in 5th , does so in 6th but to a lesser degree , shame it dosent handle

good cars, i liked the one i had as a hire car.

Computer said i did 43mpg over a full tank. I think you will only get 50mpg on a very long motorway run.

Popped in to my local ford dealer to ask about chipping the car and they said it would invalidate my warranty, shame as it would improve 5th and 6th gear performance.

These can be picked up for around £16k brand new with 0miles!

They also respond really well to bluefin and you can expect to see 180-190ish bhp iirc.

I wouldn't worry - Bluefin is easily removable come service time
