I've been building a kit car using the puma 1700 engine, now the alternator has a 2 pole JT plug on it. Since both wires are black and my engine manual is next to useless I have no idea what the connections are?

I'm assuming that one of them goes to the ignition warning light and the other to the switched ignition live. I've heard that Ford uses an "intelligent" charging system to switch the alternator off when there is no load, but I'm assuming that connecting straight the switched live won't be a problem.

Can anybody help?

www.FFOC.co.uk - the 1.7 engine is more or less the same as the one that is used in the Focus.

Well if the engine is the same, then one would presume an 'expert' on these engines would be able to help in much the same context as your post? rolleyes

and maybe if you read my question it is not asking about the 1.7 engine it is asking about the 1.6 and 1.4 as they are not the same.

They are pretty much the same, and I would tend to believe that the electrical system would be common.

What is your problem?

I havent got a problem I was just questioning the 1.4 and 1.6 being the same as in the focus that was all.

Don't worry I've figured it out. I managed to get a diagram from a ford TIS cd rom that shows the internals of the alternator. The pins are labelled 1 and 2 pin 1 goes to a electronic module within the alternator, pin 2 goes to the windings and diode assembly. Using my fluke on "diode" I got the following readings.

+ve lead with respect to chassis

pin 1 = infinity
pin 2 = 1.2V

-ve lead with respect to chassis

pin 1 = 1.2V
pin 2 = 1.4V

This means that the pin 1 means I'm looking at the diode assembly (charge light) whereas pin 2 goes to the electronics module (exciter supply).

The Sigma (Zetec-SE) engines are largely the same, the 1.25, 1.4, 1.6 and 1.7 VCT.

The 1.7 is just a bit more different because of the Variable Camshaft Timing.
