Ford Escort Factory Alarm

Have to replace the battery for an R Reg (98), Ford Escort/Orion 1.8d which has a factory fitted alarm and imobiliser but the owners manual is missing to tell me how to disable the alarm before disconnecting the battery and I seem to remember there is a clever procedure.

I have the red key to reset the immobiliser.

Can anyone help?
