Focus ST170 - top speed....

Well, have now changed from working for Volkswagen and have joined Ford. Extreamely impressed how the brand has come in recent years and the current product range is very good indeed. Had a new shape 2.0TDI Focus Titanium when I joined which looks and drive great. That sold pretty quick and while waiting for a 'proper' demo am currently running a 54 plate ST170. Now, I was pretty high up at VW and had as demonstrators some seriously good kit. New R32 when it came out, GTI and finished off my career there in the new GT 1.4 TSI (170bhp twincharger - both a turbo and supercharger fitted). As you can imagine this was a factor of the job I knew I would miss. I have to say though how good the ST170 is. We have it up for £8995 which I think is amazing value for money - indeed the performance surprised me most. Now I have seen the 'on paper' figures however the car is geared so well i'd be keen to hear what others have got out of them. At 120 in 4th it's hits the limiter with two gears still to go - 140ish in 5th....so, what is the official line with top speed of these things and what experience have others got?

A friend has got to the mid 140s IIRC, although I believe that was indicated not GPS.

Another guy I know can get to around the 160 mark, although he has a turbo on it

I've got a 2.0 Zetec on an 03' plate, down 40 bhp on the ST170 and saw a GPS indicated 136 mph on level ground (Obviously not on main road). This was shown on satnav and roadangel and is only rated to 130 in road tests, speedo was off the scale (Only shows 140mph).

This was flat out with nothing else to come, can't remember rpm. (PS mine only has the 5 speed box and don't know how ratios compare with 6 speed box)

The ST170 is good for about 140mph. I have GPS verified my top speed at 135mph that was in a 2.0L zetec. The 6 speed transmission doesn't really effect the top speed as the ST gearbox is not gear to it. It the extra top end power from the engine that gives it a higher top speed.

The ST170 is an awsome car as a standard set up. Those 300mm front brakes are fantastic.
The only thing i dislike about the ST is the power is high up in the rev range which is good for track work but no so good for buzzing round town.

If you think the ST170 is good just wait untill you get to drive the RS!!!!!!
