No doubt this has been aired before;

My S/H Mondeo needed a new condensor to get air con working, it was carried out by specialist garage (fortunately seller paid).

The air con works and colder air comes out the vents but I wouldn't call it brilliant, I need to leave it switched on, on cold all the time to make a difference. I've read sellers on ebay describing "ice cold air con" - mine certainly isn't or am I expecting too much? I can feel the compressor kicking in and out - suprised how it affects the 2 litre performance.

The latest refrigerant used in auto air conditioning (R134a) is very critical when it comes to how much you put in the system, if it is under or over filled buy just a few ounces it will not work as well as it could. Also if there are any issues with the engines cooling system such as radiator fins plugged with dirt or bugs, low on coolant, Etc that will effect how well the A/C works.

A quick test for you, with the car idling (now that it does nicely again) turn the A/C on full cold and place a thermometer in one of the center vents, after around ten minutes the thermometer should read between 40 and 50 degrees Fahrenheit on a 70 to 75F degree day. The temp of the air coming out of the vents will rise with outside ambient temps. If you can't get it to blow to around the specs I stated above then there is probably some small problem that needs diagnosing.

The condensor has gone in mine. It got regassed (with the refriderant containing UV dye for detecting leaks) and was "icy cold" for a few days. Now some of the coolant has leaked out (through the condensor) its no where near icy cold.
On a warm day, if its not feeling chilly from the vents it definitely still has a problem. As mentioned above though, the air con will cut out for a number of other issues. (as an example it relys on the electric fan to keep it cold when stationary, so if its not working it cuts out, etc etc)

Thanks to both, I have an electronic temp gauge and I'll give it a try
