RS2000 restoration
Discussion
Anyone know, as a rough ballpark figure, what I should be looking at for a ground-up, nuts & bolts restoration of a MKII RS2000?
yeah yeah I know, how long is a piece of string right? but I honestly have no idea.
There's a fair bit of welding to be done i.e. new sills, holes here & there etc etc which I would estimate to be at least 3 grand's worth of work on it's own!
And not knowing anything about painting......are cars always sprayed or can you have them "dipped" as it were, to make sure that EVERY last nook & cranny is adequately covered & less likely to rust? I'm sure I remember hearing something about "acid-dipping" i.e. the whole shell is entirely submerged in acid to see what falls off it (paint AND metal-wise!) to ensure that you're starting from as good a base as possible?
If anyone can shed any light on any of the above I'd be grateful........it's a long way off yet for the restoration but I just had to recover my RS2000 from me mum's this morning & it's been stood for about 7 years *hangs head in shame* & I hate seeing my baby in it's current state.

Well the ballpark figure I had in my head was ten grand or thereabouts.
I reckon he's about right......
The other thing I'd say, is that if you have a garage, and the enthusiasm/time, buy yourself a scraper and a welder, get rid of the paint, and do it yourself. I think most people would expect to get the painting done professionally. What you can do though is to reduce the cost considerably, by doing much of the graft yourself.
In many ways, doing it yourself is better than paying someone to do it for you. The important factor is that you know how well it has been done. I've thought about this long and hard myself, and I think that there are just too many nooks and crannies that could easily be neglected to keep costs down.
In the end though it just comes down to time!
Hi Folks,
My first post in here and one of my favourite subjects!
Anyway, you also need to bare in mind if you are going for standard restoration or modified. Either way can have its hidden costs by the way. You can easily spend 10K on a full spec engine if you put your mind to it. Also such parts as oil pressure lines, bulkhead sound proofing, center consols, etc, etc, can be very expensive and hard to find for a mint standard car.
It all really depends on yourself. I restored a Mk2 XPack RS2 some years back and it cost me about 1.5K and it looked heaps better. Did me for a few years and I was more than happy. As some may know, I also own a Mk1 RS1600 that has had a small fortune spent on it. This also makes me happy. So it works both ways. Just take your time and have fun.

Top car Dave, one of my favourite RS's of all time
Dave's RS1600 is stunning, used to have a picture of it on the keyring for my Mk2!
Do you still have the blue Mk2 Dave? I saw it being built at Mark's over 2 years ago, lovely looking car although I know you had a few probs with bits and bobs.
..Love Mk2's.
well im in the middle of doing one...., i hav done the welding and fitted inner wings myself etc to keep cost down, 9yrs on it now in a bodyshop, they have fitted the front wings and new door skins and are painting it for me.i have supplied all the panels for them, there cost for fitting them and paint is just over £3000, reckon i spent near to a £1000 on new panels...... hope this helps a little.. just one thing if they were to paint the floorpan for concurs it would of been another £1000.... its not cheap to do one..
