I've got a nearly new 06 Focus 1.6 TDCi on hire whilst the our other is getting fixed.

When I change gear the revs don't drop immediately so it seems like I'm not balancing the throttle and clutch on a gear change. I was having a play at the gears driving it back home last night and I had to come off the throttle a bit earlier than normal to stop it doing it ... it didn't feel natural.

Is there something fancy on these or am I just crap?

I think most modern cars do it, don't really know why.

its an electronic throttle damper to allow smoother gear changes and reduce emissions by keeping engine speed from varying too much

Thanks that's exactly what it feels like it's doing too!

I felt something similar when driving a company C-Max 2.0TDCi - on changing gear (up!) the revs would actually rise briefly before falling back, meaning I had to slow my gearchanges down unnaturally.

I think it's part of the throttle-by-wire on them...there's a noticeable delay between foot movement and throttle response, which is frustrating.

My mk1 Focus tdi was like that, but my new mk2 tdci isn`t. Or have I just got used to it?
