96 escort lx speedo problem
Discussion
can anyone help,
My speedo works but it on goes up to 20mph then it sticks, but if you accelarate up to 40 mph the needle will free itself and work fine. But then when you slow down to under 20mph, the needle will just stick on 20mph. Now i've been told it could be my drive in the gear box, but my millage works files so apparently it wont be that. Another thing when your driving along when the needle gets stuck, if you tap the dashboard the needle will work fine, until you slow down again. Can anyone help? Cheers Gav

Does sound like the speedo is cream crackered.
It's not hard to take out though, take out the obvious screws at the bottom (and possibly at the top) and then lever the whole dash unit out. It won't come out far before it's going to be stopped by the speedo cable and the dash wiring.
Unclip the wiring then reach round the back and struggle with the speedo cable for a while it will come eventually though. Once that's off you can pull the whole unit out, it should just fit without removing the steering wheel.
The speedo module is just held into to the dash unit with screws so whip it out.
You can try and fiddle with the speedo to see what's making it stick or just get another one from a scrapyard (so much easier to remove when you just smash the dash to bits!).
If you get another one you'll want to pick one with a similar mileage cos you'll need to run it forward (or back - not sure if you can) to match your currnat mileage.
