I have a Focus 1.6 Zetec 2000. Recently I have noticed that the gear leave does not spring from the left into the centre i.e. I can leave it in between 1st and 2nd or 3rd and 4th but it still springs back from 5th and reverse. Anyone know why?

I think the Focus has springs under the part where the gearstick fits, One of those has probably failed. I don't *think* the springs are in the gearbox, unlike some Fiestas etc.

yup, the neutral spring has failed

it costs buttons, and does fit on the gear lever.
pull the gaiter up and you'll see it on the base of the lever.

Yeah as Nighthawk said. It is really really easy to change yourself. When mine went it cost about 28p for the spring and took about 20 mins to do in total. Ford wanted £80 to do if I remeber correctly!!!

If you want a step by step guide on how to do it, have a search on www.ffoc.co.uk the Focus owners club, that's where I found out how to do it.

Cheers,

Paul.

Thanks for that plfrench, can you remember where you got the spring from as ffoc.co.uk seems to be on the blink.

Just went into the ford dealer and bought it from the parts counter. The parts price was ok, it was just their labour charge that was extortionate!!

Try this link, it even has photo's! Looking at this the spring is £2.82 so a bit more than I remember, but still a damn site cheaper than £80 ford want!!

Hi,

I have this problem also, unfortunately the link above is now broken and I'm really looking to get hold of some pics of how this should all go together.

Thanks.

no need for images

go to the parts counter and buy the neutral spring, lift the gaiter and look inside the console, you'll see the spring.

the rest is easy
