I'm looking to replace the valve stem oil seals on my Ford Pinto engine in my kit car, I've heard there's a valve spring compressor that works without removing the head. Does anyone know where I could get one ? Or even better, rent one for a few hours ?

Eventually the plan is to remove the head, decoke, lap the valves etc etc, but at the moment I just want to get the car on the road for the summer, and I think the puffs of blue smoke emitted from the car at startup and on decelleration may be a little too much to pass the visible smoke test for the MoT

Anyone any ideas ?

I got mine from Farnells, I think they're readily available. It hooks under the bottom of the valve spring and compresses just the spring, so you can take the colletts out and remove the compressed spring without disturbing anything else. Brilliant, as long as you have enough space above the heads to work in.

Farnell as in the electronics company ?

How much if you don't mind me asking, sounds exactly like the thing I'm after, I've got loads of space above the head as it's a long way forward in the engine bay with nothing but the carb near it

Edit: A quick check on uk.farnell.com shows up two items for Valve Spring Compressor, one's a normal head off job for £40, but they have another which will be "Sold until stock runs out" for £10, but it doesn't have any firther details, Sykes Pickavant the manufacturers no longer list the cheaper one, and Farnell don't have an pictures...

Do you have the model number of yours handy ?
