The reversing lights on my Mondeo Zetec Estate have stopped working. Bulbs are fine.

Its an 02 model.

Any ideas?

I'm guessing there is some kind of switch on the gearbox thats activated when reverse is selected. Can this become dislodged?

MOT is soon so pretty urgent.

Cheers

Sorry, dont know how to fix. But I'm pretty sure you dont need a reverse light for an MOT!

I would have thought that is incorrect. Reversing lights are obviously a warning to drivers approaching from the rear (ooo-er) that the vehicle may be coming towards them.

Check the switch, should be on the gearbox somewhere, or maybe a fuse?

Well I know for sure you dont have to have a reverse light, but I'm not sure whether if the car has one fitted it needs to be working. Probably worth giving you MOT station a ring.

Thanks for the help!

I am pretty sure if a car has reversing lights, they need to be working to pass an MOT.

I have been on another Ford site and it seems to be the switch on the gearbox is prone to failure. Just a straight replacement should fix it.

Nope, you don't need functioning reversing lights - My 205 passed a couple of MOT's without it working. No idea what the problem would be though!

Alrite there, no ya dont need reverse lights for the test..

therel be a switch on the gearbox with a smallish connector (Im speaking from a peugeot background here, but they should all be similar) - flick off the connector, put the ignition on and the car in reverse - get a bit of wire, strip the ends off a bit and place over the terminals of the switch, with someone checking behind the car if the lights come on the switch is faulty.....

switches are normally located on top of the gearbox and can be unscrewed (shouldnt be very tight anyway) with a combination spanner....

airbox or similar may have to be removed to get to it

good luck
