I am thinking of getting a cheap ish Transit for towing a trailer with the race car and wanted to know which would be the best and cheapest to run/own transit van, I assume the 2.5 D is going to be better than the 2.0 litre petrol for towing? Are they expensive to run and maintain and do high milers matter, ie. 140k what sort of mileage do they become tired or useless?

The 95-> Transit with the 76ps 2.5 diesel lump was the most popular and will be fine for shifting the Xr around. It's not the quickest vehicle around and it's not the quietest diesel on the planet, but it's a work horse.

The Engine is good for hundreds of thousands service, I've seen a good number of these vehicles pass 250000 on the original engine.

The MT75 transmission is Ok, and replacement with non ford recons is cheap should something happen. Even if it does go wrong, it's easy to strip and rebuild.

The rear axles, depending on which option you go for are also trouble free on the whole,

As for the rest, it's a Transit...it'll do what you ask of it and then ask for more.

I'm up in the north west m8, where things are cheaper and dragons roam the land
So, i'm unable to suggest vehicle prices to you

Have a look round some of the local auctions and even the BT fleet disposal resellers etc.

I suppose the main thing is to set a budget and get the best you can for the cash.

Why oh why drive something that will make you deaf, are so slow its frankly comical let alone towing & are not very cheap to buy.

3-4k Will get you a very decent, quiet, fast Jap MPV with all the buttons & air con etc, just as cheap to run, but you'll get there in comfort & in half the time.

Might I suggest the following:

Toyota Granvia 3.0L TD 140 bhp

or

Mazda Bongo 2.5 Tdi 135 Bhp, will tow at Illegal speeds all day long

Hmm not sure about the Bongo either! My budget will only be under a grand, a grand max so they're a bit over priced!
