Any ideas where to look for one. I have been tempted to get one for a few years but have no idea where to start looking.

I may either buy one already done or buy a good Mk1 and fit the engine myself. Any tips

cheers

www.rsoc.co.uk

Used to have one myself - great cars, and are still commanding a high price (infact, they're going up in price!)

I'm assuming you mean a Mk 1 Escort shell with Cossie running gear (as opposed to a '92-'96 Escort Cosworth)?

www.passionford.com is very busy, and might well have what you're after.

Dont bother with the rsoc site.
Most Cosworth fans use :
www.passionford.com

Not sure what you mean by a Mk1 Escort as thats not a Cosworth but a much older car. The Escort Cosworth came in two types, Large Turbo(early)& small Turbo (late). If you intend modifying the car the large Turbo car is easier to mod. There is also a special edition model called a Monte.

chatting to a friend who builds engine last night and he was suggesting zetecs with either turbos or a Supercharger . Apart from the price any reason not to go that way instead of cosworth power.

and again cheers for the links

At the moment the cheapest way to get a high power Mk1 is by going for a Cosworth Turbo motor. They almost drop straight in.. but money has to be spent on other things, rear suspension needs turreting, you need a nice strong axle, t5 gearbox etc. etc. As usual, it's almost always cheaper to buy a car that's already been modded.

Both Zetecs and Duratecs are good engines, and you can get decent power out of them, but they're not as straight forward to fit was the Pinto based Cosworth YB aswell as not being as easy to extract power from.

There's quite a few Cossie Mk1 and Mk2 Escorts hanging around on www.turbosport.co.uk Good webside with really knowledgable guys.

£5k will pick up a Cossie powered Mk1, but it wont have all the good bits on it. For a fully sorted car, maybe running 330bhp with decent lsd, 5 link rear end, quality brakes, cage etc you are looking at £7k+, depending on condition of the shell and whatnot. Proper sorted cars will cost more, but for a roadcar you dont see many more than £10k unless it's a special machine/rally car.

Consider that a standard 1.1 Mk1 Escort in very good condition will cost £2K

They are a heck of a lot cheaper than that in Australia, as a Guide I got a mint white 1.3L auto Mk2 2 door (admittedly not running) for the princely sum of about £40 (about a year and half ago) I did manage to sell it on for £150 though (didn't do a thing to it).

OTOH genuine RS parts like RS four spoke wheels and bits like that which weren't available in Australia cost a fortune, a stock cosworth YB turbo engine in Australia? over £4000 No wonder most have jap turbo engines stuck in when they are a quarter of the price with less milage.

Mk2's are cheaper than Mk1's although not by that much. 3 years ago I picked up a good running 1.3 which needed a bit of welding (but had full MOT and the like) for £500. You just have to know where to look.. although have a look at this on E-bay!

They're worth what somebodies willing to pay, basically. As with most cars, a modified one will almost always work out cheaper than a standard one once totalled up.

I love Mk1+Mk2's, but for somebody looking for a fast classic that's easy to mod there are probably better/cheaper cars out there.
