have a 7 year old Mk3 Focus RS with only 14,500 miles on the clock and in excellent condition . In the interest of time/expense My dealer advised me to download the latest Synch3 software update from the Ford UK website and follow the instructions therein.

I entered my VIN no and downloaded the attached zip file update accordingly. A dashboard message confirmed that the update from the flash drive was successful and it would take effect after the next engine start. On starting the engine the screen Synch 3 screen went black and the dealer has confirmed I need a new £800 APIM unit.

Ford UK have declined any financial support as they are hiding behind the fact that the vehicle is outside of warranty. Per the Ford Focus RS and other Ford forums this is a known update issue.

Bet there’s a clause somewhere before the ‘Agreed’ button.

Whats an AIPM module and why does a software update mean it's so badly damaged that you have to buy a new one?

Most older electronics like this can be unlocked/reflashed these days

Good to know, thanks. I'll be leaving mine alone.

Thanks for the heads up, not that I have felt any need to update mine but definitely won't be tempted now. Love my ST, had a few different Fords over the years but think it will be the last, they seem to have gone downhill the last few years.

As suggested, maybe a MCOL might get them talking, or at least contribute towards it.

Failing that, you might be able to get a refurbed unit for less?

Updated mine with the jailbroken software, as Ford will only allow you to update certain systems up to a certain point, pretty easy to do, did my wife's car when she bought a new one recently as well, both 17 plates cars on the latest Sync 3 software and maps.

I have just bought a 2016 Mondeo. I updated my Sync and maps no problem with a USB stick. Took some time but no problem.

Sounds familiar! I had the exact same experience back when I had one. Update to brick. Same thing full replacement including screen but fortunately it was still under warranty. Took about a month for ford to fix too.
