Hello all

A female friend of mine is looking to spend 2-3k on a Ford Ka. I now a bit about cars, but nothing about these.

Is there anything I/she needs to look out for? I know some (most?) came with the old OHV engine, is that the case for this price range?

Any links etc would be much appreciated

Cheers

Up to the 2004 models they have the endura ohv engine. Its was quite extensively modified from the older ohv engines and so is reliable and quite nippy. Best to get a car with ABS as this was an option on the lower models and also power steering wasn't standard on all until 97. For £2-3k you should be looking for a 98/99. Just watch out for cars used by young drivers, can sometimes have been driven hard. Best thing to do is have a look at the brakes to see if they look heavily worn also avoid ex rentals as these have hard lives.

Hope this is of some help

Thanks Nightdriver, very useful info

Would you know if there is much difference between the trim levels? AC would be nice, but not essential.

This silver on looks good:

There are three trim levels, Ka, Ka2 and Ka3. AC was available on all, think it was standard on 3.
The silver one looks good, good spec. Look for one with a full service history, and if anything looks remotely dodgy walk away, theres loads out there. May be worth a hunt around some ford dealers and look for trade ins. Get them towards the end of the month and make them silly offers. They have there monthly sales quota to meet so in the last few days of the month you can get some good discounts!

Could she stretch to £4.5k ?

If she could then she could get herself a brand new one. The parents just got one as a runaround. Its brand new, 0 miles, PS, ABS, metallic paint, latest 70ps engine etc etc.

It would seem kinda daft to get a 4 or 5 year old example when you can get a brand new one for not much more £££

Thanks for your input.

I'm sure she could, but as the car will be parked on the street in London, she doesnt see the point.

I can see your point though Not bad on depreciation are they?
