The ST24 was a front wheel drive car, with the duratec ve 2.5 v6 engine mated to the MTX75 transaxle.

And a very fine drive it is to, imho (cough.. check the Mondeo section in classifieds)

Seriously though, a very good drive. If you need a biggish car with a big motor that isn't ancient and won't cost the earth to buy/run/repair then there aren't that many other choices out there imho.

Never heard of the big end problem. Had a quick look on www.fordmondeo.org and couldn't find any mass panic. The head gasket problem is an issue although it's almost always caused by a water pump failure (plastic impellers). Replacing the water pump with a metal impeller version sorts it.

Car is quite difficult to work on though, space is at a premium. Front arb bushes required me to drop the front subframe an inch and the alternator took me all day. They do go through front wishbones though presumably because of the weight but at 12 quid and an hour a side once you've got the hang of it it doesn't matter. Rust proofing isn't the greatest though.

I'll keep an eye on it cheers.

TBH, it's a bit of a race what will end it's life first... rust, hgf or the wife's parking

Good cars for the money though.

I hope you knocked him to the floor and asked him where the rear differential was....before demanding compensation for the missing items
