Ford main dealer prices. Is this reasonable?
Discussion
Had our family car (mk2 Kuga) in for a service and MOT. As part of this they identified that the rear discs and pads need replacing and the fronts are low. This is as I expected. What I didn't expect was them to quote me £1000 to do all 4 corners.
Is this reasonable? Am I really out of touch that a Kuga (not Titanium either so 300mm discs on the front) would be that much for a brake change? And I had them confirm, all they were going to do was to replace all 4 discs and the pads on all 4 corners.
I only have a low profile trolley jack (for my TVR) at home and I am reasonably confident it won't have the reach/lift for the Kuga. May consider those QuickJacks, they would make this a breeze.

Suggests here that it's £146 all in for front and rear disks and pads.

Go on the Eurocarparts site, put the discs and pads in your basket and you should have an option for a local garage to fit them, should give you an idea of the cost.
£1000 seems very steep to me!
I've done that for the front. £140 parts and a garage not that local will do it for £52 (which seems cheap..lol).£1000 seems very steep to me!
Glad I wasn't totally off base thinking Ford are being a bit excessive.
Book a hotel near the garage, have a nice meal and a day out while the car is in the garage, you'll still be paying less than Ford charge!
I paid a local Garage around £50 a couple of years ago so that's about right.
I do it my self now, it's really simple if you can follow a YouTube video and have basic tools.

You'd be surprised. I used my low profile jack to change brake pads on an Evoque recently. In any case, if you bought a top spec jack and did it yourself, you will still save a small fortune

The dealer just quoted me £235 for oil and filter on a 2018 Connect. They'll sell me oil, oil filter, air filter and wiper blades from the same dealer for £80 all in. The labour is a total stitch up.
The only thing i'll add is these can use the 0w20 oil that is stupidly expensive.LuS1fer said:
My daughter was quoted over £1000 for a strut top mount and two track rod ends when her Agila failed the MOT.
She got it done for £250. I think they just don't want the work or they think people will smile as they get ripped off.
I think a lot of garages have so much work on that they can charge top whack and gladly wave goodbye to anyone who won't pay it.She got it done for £250. I think they just don't want the work or they think people will smile as they get ripped off.

Told me the part was £600, new pressure sensor £90, Gas £100 plus labour.
Part can be had direct from manufacturer for £175. Pressure sensor £40, but isn't needed to replace a condenser. Other places charge £60 for a regas.
They were overcharging by at least £500 (40%).

It's partly why cars are so readily run until the ground and scrapped. Throwaway wasteful society, high labour costs and oftentimes hit and miss car mechanic expertise - some really don't know what they're doing.Compare it to a lot of other countries where old cars seem to just keep on going forever, partly because labour costs are lower and mechanics actually know how to fix them.

You'd think they'd have pride in their abilities to fix cars, but no. They seem to be happier charging a fortune for "winter inspections" and fitting new tyres (but must be matching across an axle and best tyres on front axle).
Just rang another local dealer for the same oil and filter service on the Connect. They aren't even consistent from one to another, these want £210, as opposed to £235 from the other one. When I asked specifically what I'd be getting for that, it's obvs the oil and filter, plus a video plus a health check. Great.
Apparently all this takes 2 hours for trained " technicians " with access to hoists and everything else required for a quick turnaround. I do the oil and filter every 6k between scheduled services on this van ( who the hell runs anything for 20k on the same oil ), and it takes me half an hour without a ramp. I can pretty much guarantee it will be in and out in 40 mins max, but they'll charge me for 2 hours.
I'm going to have to give them it, it's new enough and low mileage enough to have to consider the impact on resale should I part with it without their stamps , but it galls me to be knowingly fked over. It's especially annoying, as the schedule is either a year or 20k miles. It's been a year, but only 6k miles since they had it in for a £430 major, as I've been ill for 9 months and hardly worked.
