I am going to look at a 60k genuine Series 1 RS Turbo on Sunday. It is a family heirloom of a friend who is selling due to re-location constraints.

I used to own one of these, albeit a rather tatty one, 8 years ago and have since owned more modern performance cars. My question is, will I be disappointed in what I see. The car is ultimately 20 years old now, I do remember having a lot of fun in my old RS but have this feeling that ownership may not be the same as before. The other thing is that I feel that many will look at it as the boy racer's weapon of choice. Is this still the case?

To finish, apart from rust in the obvious places, battery tray, under the car, etc. Is there anything that I should be keen to look for?

Thanks in advance.

If it's the series 1, then I would consider that it has lost it's boy racer image now and is considered to be more of a classic as there are far fewer of them around now (particularly in good original condition).

As for what to look for, check the engine start up from cold for rattles and smoke and make sure the dashboard hasn't split.

veetwin.......you have v.good taste!

the s1 rst is one of the only two mk3 models i like, the s2rst looked too much like the xr3i to me (that spoilt it imho),the s1 didnt suffer from the same disease.

apart from the s1,the only other mk3 i'd like is a rs1600i,another car that you dont see around anymore.

go for it mate!

Thanks, didn't get to view the car as my friend had family matters to deal with. We are going to re-arrange for another weekend. Shame really as I was looking forward to it.
