Hi, some advice please.

I am looking to change my car and i'm quite interested in the 2.5 V6 Cougars.
I get the impression they are quite under rated?...(+ relatively rare on the roads)
Q. I would prefer the V6, or is there any reason why i should avoid and go for the 16V?

Q. Manual or auto..? I'm happy with either tbh?
Q. Anything else i should know about these cars?

I have a budget of £4000 - £4500.

Cheers all

A. Yes. Horrid, horrid things. Like driving a supertanker... fine in a straight line, appalling round corners. Avoid. Not the Blue Oval's greatest hour...

Bullshit!

They aren't the best round the corners but they're not the worst either.

Very reliable cars, I've owned a V6 for 5 years and apart from wear and tear items the only things to go on mine have been bulbs.

Too late..

I bought a silver '98 46000 mile V6 Xpack Cougar...and i love it.
Smooth engine, loads of toys, and i for one like the looks. It's different to the majority of bubblegum cars out there.

Can't help it...Fords are in my blood..and TVR's

I wish you enjoyment of your Cougar. They are great cars - I have had mine (v6 x-pac auto) for 4 years and put 60000 miles on it in that time. In that time I have only had to service it and change tyres (not cheap) until last month when I had a major electrics problem; now repaired but at a cost of £600. After all the miles I've done that seems not too bad. Now at 93k miles and still original exhaust.

The auto is a bit slow off the mark but once it is rolling it goes! Max speed so far is 135 mph on an autobahn in Germany; this was with two up and a full load (taking my son to university in Mainz) I had more speed to go but chickened out when a driver came from the inside lane and I had to show how good my brakes were!

If you want a dedicated Cougar site try www.ukcougar.com/

Always used to have Fords until they went FWD.... Never looked at them since......always wondered about the cougar though whether they were FWD of RWD, (TG never tell you these things). THanks for my enlightenment Dennis!

Scratch Cougar).............

The Cougar would have been a lot better car with rear wheel drive I agree, but even with the current set up that I have (Front wheel drive and about 180 bhp from a V6 2.5 going through the front) it is still a nice drive but you have to fight the front wheels on a fast start! It is however a GT in the old fasioned sense of the term - I have driven it from home to Mainz in 8 hours (axcluding 1 hour on the ferry) and still felt fresh when I got out. A relaxed drive.

I get a Porsche in 2 weeks time and have to sell one of our two cars. My wife (whose vote is important) will keep her Cougar, so my Toyota will have to find a new home!!

Well if you were mad you might want to consider the 16v...

Agreed. 16v bad, 24 valve good!!!!!!!! Different engines - 16 valve has a timing belt that can snap, 24 valve doesn't. V6 is smoooooth and goes so well (like a Mondeo 220 on which it is based). 16 valve goes like a sporty Fiesta. Take your pick.

Already picked......2.5 V6 24 valves..Niiice.

I particularly like the low speed pick up in 5th. You can cruise around at 30 mph no problem. My Cougar also has proper useable mid range...at 70mph in 5th..foot down..job done.

I've done 1000 miles so far, no complaints at all..

Enjoy it. We have had ours for 4 years and 70,000 miles. Apart from servicing and tyres (not cheap) our only costs have been 2 alternators, a weak point with the car unfortunately.

The Cougar is fast but not a sports car, more of a GT in the original meaning of the term.
