Ford Focus 2012 - No Sync?

I recently bought a 2012 Focus, with the Sony Radio system. On the radio it has a "phone" button and when you go into the settings it has a bluetooth button. I've been struggling to connect my phone to the bluetooth and today did some more investigating. It appears that despite looking like it has bluetooth the car had no Sync software from new. This is incredibly frustrating as it's something I use a lot of.

It is possible to upgrade the Focus from a mk 2 sync, which would be the correct one for my car, to the Mk 3 sync with Android Auto/iPhone connection, but is it possible to install a sync system and bluetooth integration where there wasn't one originally? Even a mk2 would be better than no phone connection at all!

EDIT - Or, as it has the Sony head unit, is it possible that it doesn't have Sync but has some Sony version or something instead?

What's the reg and I'll check ETIS. The phone button maybe just mute but odd that you have Bluetooth in the menu

Sync was around then I think? Pretty sure it was. Other Mk3 Focus's had v1 sync and then the facelift models had mk2 sync I believe.

Says "Less Sync" and I can't see anything re B/T in the list. If the headunit has B/T in the menu have you checked that it's not full up of old connect devices?

have you got a microphone anywhere? Just checking as ETIS can be a fker when it comes to B/T - they word in in so many different ways and may not mention it at all if it's part of the Sony unit

That’s the head I have on my ‘11 plate Focus platinum. Actually a basic platinum spec if that makes any sense as it doesn’t have all the goodies such as heated seats. However it does Bluetooth to my phone. I luckily printed off the VIN spec before Mr Ford got all coy about it and that says “ BT/VC phone interface + USB Connect”, the USB socket is in the glove box. Also has voice control which I’ve never tried!
With that spec radio I would have expected Bluetooth functionality as non platinum models had a different radio front.

Not sure, where might it be? The car was a Ford demonstrator Titanium X model with lots of extras like heated seats, DAB, auto box etc. I would have expected B/T to be there, but maybe not.

Wife had 2 bog standard Titaniums between 2009 and 15 with that head unit, both had bluetooth. Only extras we paid for were the spare and the fancy red metallic paint she wanted.

Not a stupid question, but yes. I have a "bluetooth" box I can tick and untick. There doesn't seem to be any other options though, like a previous list of paired phones or anything like that.

Just to come back to this, I tried using the aux port on the car yesterday and that didn't work either, just a bog standard cable from the phones audio jack into the cars aux port. Is there any chance a data interface or something has failed? I've had the fuse for the radio out and the handbook says that included Bluetooth module etc, and the fuse was fine. Unless there is a separate one, but I can't see it in the book?

The car went into Ford this morning who deduced that the Bluetooth Control Module had failed, and offered to replace it for £550! Very kind of them....

Quick look on eBay and they're available for £35.

And..... finally....

The problem was a failed Bluetooth module, which apparently is not all that uncommon. It lives behind the heater controls, and wasn't a difficult job to do really. Remove radio, remove HVAC which was a bit fiddly and involved lifting up the gear lever surround, then just swap the old one out for the new one, and all good to go. Panels went back easily enough, only thing broken was a little clip on the USB cable, although it should stay where it is without any trouble.

Total cost to fix £30 for a second hand Bluetooth module, and half an hour of time. Quote from Ford, £550!!!
