Ford Focus 08 Aircon query

Had my focus since 09 and aircon stopped working about 6 years ago, wasnt that bothered at the time. Mrs now uses it as her work car and in the recent heat she has obviously become bothered about it!
Took it to get it regassed and they said a pipe connection was loose and we'd need to get that sorted first - a garage lifted £65 to sort that for her but said that the pipe was corroded for the system. he wrote on the receipt that it would be £130+VAT for the part, £100+VAT labour to fit then £45+VAT for the regas and £18+VAT for a pollen filter
No reason to doubt those prices but seems a lot to get it sorted, but if that's what it takes then that is what it takes - my concern is that the pipe is replaced and the aircon still doesn't work because of compressor or some other part? Obviously the car is ancient and we spend about £500 a year on it in MOT repairs to keep it going, don't really want to chuck £300 at it and still have it not working. Is that a common thing?
