Hi,

We have a 2016 Focus 1.0l Ecoboost with approximately 55,000 miles on the clock. Last week, while accelerating onto a dual carraigeway, the car coughed a few times in second gear. Changed up to third and it did the same thing, then smoothed out but had absolutely no power, as if the turbo has stopped working. No smoke, no random noises and it was driving completely fine just before that.

The car will drive completely smoothly, but there's no turbo kick at all so going up hills takes an age. It will get to speed and cruise, just without any urgency. I've also noticed that starting it, it doesn't fire exactly on first turn and may need a slight bit of throttle to get it going.

I've been advised to check the rubber diaphragm on the top of the engine which I have and prdered a new one as it doesn't seem to secure but other than that, has anyone had any similar issues? I don't think it's the turbo or the engine itself, potentially a split hose meaning the turbo is losing all pressure? No warnings came up on the dash. It did go into limp mode once but hasn't since. It's not being driven regularly as we have the other car but has been used occasionally and every drive is the same.

Cheers in advance for any options

Check for split turbo pipes. If it isn't that, it IS your turbo.

Many years ago my BIL had an issue with his company Rover 200 (see I said it was many years ago!).

The car demonstrated the same symptoms you describe so he took it to the dealer.

Mechanic came out, looked at the car as my BIL described the symptoms, scratched his head and said "Wrr, it's a diesel init". So my BIL agreed that yes, indeed it was a diesel but the car used to have performance and suddenly it didn't. Answer, "Wrr, it's a diesel". So BIL suggested that they open the bonnet and take a look, mechanic glances under the bonnet and declares confidently "Yer, it's a diesel". My BIL took a look and suggested that the problem could be down to the boost hose that wasn't connected to the intake.
