Ford Mondeo Recommendations
Discussion
My FIL wants a Ford Mondeo, at least 2.0l and petrol/manual preferred. We will be getting this for him but I'm not sure what we should be looking out for.
Ideally we don't want to spend more than £6,000 and would like it to be at least a 2010 plate with good mileage. This needs to last him for awhile and he will be responsible for the upkeep. Therefore I want to make sure we get the most reliable one we can.
But because I don't know anything about Ford I'm not sure if there is anything we should look out for and is the Diesel better?

With that budget and the desire for a petrol/manual combination, your only option is going to be the rather lacklustre naturally-aspirated 2.0. If he's happy to concede on the gearbox he can get the much more powerful 2.0 Ecoboost (turbocharged) with 200bhp and higher trim levels (Titanium X / Titanium X Sport).
Be aware that the "PowerShift" automatic box with these is a dual-clutch variant with specific, important service intervals. They're a bit rough-and-ready but not particularly unreliable if serviced on time.

Personally i'd be looking for either a 1.6 Ecoboost, facelift or a 2.0 Diesel facelift.

I bought a new Mondeo 2.0 Edge manual in 2009 and it's still being run every day by my ex-Mrs. I always thought it went well even with 148bhp.
I think the only thing that went wrong was the usual heater fan failure on certain speeds, easily fixed with a new board.
The rubber weather strips on the sills also fell off, early in life but seem to serve no obvious function.
Well over 100k on it now.
Just watch out for ex-taxis.

Thank you, this put my mind at ease. He’s so specific about what he wanted and I was worried it might be a bit of a money pit. I think the only thing that went wrong was the usual heater fan failure on certain speeds, easily fixed with a new board.

Any idea why he specifically wants a petrol one? These type of cars really suit a diesel lump due to the extra torque and much better fuel economy. The 2.0 and the 2.2 TDCI engines are both known to be pretty robust engines. The 2.2 was derived from the transit I believe so you could see 300k miles out of one providing its serviced well.
