I'm looking at a 66 plate Ford Ecosport with the Powershift gearbox. I've heard some bad things about early models of this gearbox. Are these rumours true, and did they affect Ecosport models in late 2016?

I always tend to steer well clear of dual-clutch autos. A torque-converter is a much smoother and more reliable alternative.

I think the Ecosport was face-lifted around 2018. Prior to the face-lift, the only automatic option was the 1.5-litre petrol mated to a dual-clutch Powershift 'box. After the face-lift, the 1.0-litre Ecoboost was available with a much better torque-converter automatic. So if you must have an automatic Ecosport, I'd suggest going for the later one with the 1.0-litre engine.

I'm guessing a 66-plate model would be a pre-face-lift meaning that if it's an auto, it would have the 1.5-litre engine, which in turn would mean that it has the problematic Powershift dual-clutch auto,

I presume the Ecosport gets the dry clutch variant of the powershift. The one with all the well documented issues.

Definitely best avoided.

Is that specific type good\bad? Dunno. Have the issues been resolved? Dunno.

What I can say is that certain ones have definitely had issues that Ford shied away from. Journalist John Cadogan has plenty to say on the topic, in his unique aussie style, eg, https://autoexpert.com.au/posts/ford-powershift-tr...

However, I've owned and driven (VAG, wet-clutch 6-speed) dual-clutch autos for the past 5 years and had no issues at all, so they're not all bad. (small sample size, YMMV)

I agree.
