I've recently swapped back to a Ford: 2016 Octavia to 2017 Mondeo.

The Mondeo is vastly superior in every way, other than fuel economy (its a bit slower off the mark too, but the car is much bigger) . When I get chance to take it on a long run, I'll give the Mondeo a bit of an Italian Tune Up, which might help. It has had an easy, low mileage, life so far.

The Ecoboost appears to be fairly complex. How does the TSI differ from the Ecoboost technology wise in order to achieve its superior economy?

Those VAG things are both supercharged and turbocharged I think.

Nah, that engine didn't last long (in both senses) and from 2012/13 the 1.4 engines were turbocharged only.

The 1.4 TSI (of TFSI if in an Audi) are great engines and the 150bhp ones with cylinder on demand are even better. I pine for another car with that engine I really do

Lying in emissions?

I've come from a Passat 2.0tdi to a focus 2.0ecoblue and again noticing lower mpg by about 8/10mpg.

I'm assuming that there is better modelled and more closely monitored combustion in the TSI
