Hi, just wondering why my mondeo st 2.2 tdci is only getting 35mpg on decent runs? Could there be an underlining problem as it should be doing alot more than 34mpg especially with eco driving. Thanks

When I bought mine it was showing 35 mpg average. With my 95% dual carriageway commute I average 40 which I understand is about the best you can hope for.

Just realised I think your talking MK3? Im talking MK4.

Both of my 2.2 mk3's would do around 36mpg stop/start town driving and 45+ on a longer run and I'm not exactly light footed, 50mpg was easily achievable if you kept the speed down on the motorway.
Does the car warm up quickly from cold and the temperature gauge sit and stay dead centre once warmed up? Poor mpg on the mk3 is more often than not caused by a faulty thermostat of which there are two on the tdci engine, the main one in the top hose on the right hand of the centre head (less likely to fail) and another small oil cooler thermostat on the water pump (more likely).

I get an average of 50mpg in the winter and a bit more in the summer. That's a 55 mile each way commute that's mostly motorway or dual carriageway. Works out between 650 and 700 miles on a brimmed tank of diesel.

I used to get 55mpg from my old ST TDCi when it had low mileage. When dad had it up to 185k miles, it dropped to around 45mpg. Used to get about 35mpg around town, with hills, traffic etc.

Does it get regular oil changes? It may need a catalyst regeneration forcing, to burn off all the carbon crud.
