Considering a Mk7.5 ecoboost fiesta but a bit confused by the various versions.

ST line Red, Stline Black and Zetec ST seem to be the same thing. But with slightly different trim. Some have 17inch rims and some 15. Having asked the main dealer salesman it seems unclear if the ST versions actually have lowered/ stiffened suspension or they just appear that way because of the lower profile rubber.

One of the mapping companies tells me that the 100bhp and the 123 bhp engines are identical other than the map.

It is all very confusing.

Firstly the 100hp engine actually uses a different turbo to the 125/140 variations. This information came from Ford when the engines were launched. It's actually the two more powerful engines that are separated by mapping. The 140hp engine also has a slightly thicker head gasket to the 125hp, however apart from that it is software only. (Apparently the head gasket thing is precautionary only and not a must). With the Mk8 they have changed this and the 100/125 now share the same turbo.

The 125 car basically has 'overboost' enabled to give you the extra 25hp and is fitted with an 'eco' mode button that turns this off. This drops the power back to 100hp and remaps the throttle response to be slightly softer. I notice zero difference in economy but the difference in the cars response is marked. Even your passenger will feel the car change it's 'attitude' when you flip the button. The 100 & 140 variants do not have this switchable overboost.

The 100 & 125 cars also have slightly different final drives on the gearbox to increase acceleration. Driving wise there is a marked difference between the 100 and 125, but not as much of a difference between the 125 and 140. (140 obviously a bit faster but not as much as I thought it would be, the gearing on the 125 kind of cancels it out in feeling, if not on paper)

Trim wise the ST-Line cars have sportier seats and lower firmer suspension that standard cars but not the same rates as the full ST. I think the ride height is the same but the shocks are slightly softer for a more compliant / better ride. Think of them as 'half way' houses to the full ST.
