Hi guys,

I have had the car for around two weeks now. Purchased for my wife.

We have a history of high performance petrol motors. Focus ST, M3, currently a M140i also.

Anyway, have filled the tank with nearly £80 worth of fuel, I have done around 75 miles from reset and the fuel tank is saying there are 240miles left to go!

This is the same engine I had in my Focus ST. So I am genuinely shocked it drinks this much. The mpg is also stating 17mpg. And I am not hooning around.

How accurate are the mpg figures in the Smax? I might get it looked at.

What sort of range are you guys getting for this model?

I have decided to run the tank down to pretty much zero to get an accurate figure for the total range.

All local driving and a lot of stop start and the odd 120mile round trip once a month is the current style.

If anything it shows you how much the modern petrols have moved on in terms of mpg. The M140i barely falls under 28mpg.

Which engine is it? The 2011 S-Max would have the 2.5l 5 cylinder as I don't think the S-Max came with the 4 cylinder version until the 2nd generation (2015).

If it is the 5 cylinder then I think most Focus ST owners only got mid-20's, so a bigger/heavier vehicle in stop-start traffic getting low-20's isn't unreasonable. 17mpg is maybe a little low though...

Not a direct comparison but I have a 2010 Mondeo with the 2 litre 200bhp ecoboost engine driving through the Powershift gearbox and I'm getting 32/33 mpg on runs, reducing to high 20s with continuous commuting into London. On that basis your 17mpg suggests you have a problem somewhere. Assuming the engine seems to run OK it would be worth checking for a fuel leak or binding brakes (one wheel hot to the touch when the others are cool).

I used to have the 2010 shape with the old 203 bhp Ecoboost and the powershift, and now I have the new shape with the 240bhp Ecoboost and powershift. On the new car, over the last 2,000 miles it's averaging 15 mpg according to the computer. All London stop start driving, kiddy commuting etc. On a half term trip to Wiltshire and back, fully loaded but driving gently andl cruising at 85 on the A303, it averaged 28 ish.

I can well believe your numbers. I've found the SMax to be a great family car but hideous on fuel.

Did you get anywhere with this OP or is it just a case of accepting the S Max has pretty horrendous consumption with the ecoboost unit?
