Disaster struck on my Mondeo on friday, sounds like a big end has gone and only just made it home. I don't really want to get rid of the car as it is in good condition inside and out and I enjoy driving the car.

So...has anybody got any idea of the cost of a 3.0 litre short block? and if it can be mated to Mondeo Mk1 heads/gearbox? I might as well upgrade it if I'm going to replace the engine!! Obviously it will need chipping to get it running right but that is the easy bit.

Any help appreciated.

Thanks,

Paul

I know you've probably thought of this but have you tried running it without the ancilliaries belt to see if it makes the same noise? Mine starting making an ominous rumbling noise a few weeks ago but when I removed the belt it was perfectly quiet meaning the problem was either dry bearings in the PAS pump, alternator, air-con pump or one of the belt idler wheels or th ebelt tensioner. This was on a 2.5 so I'm not sure if it's the same but maybe worth a look.

Regards,

Mark

Hi Dern,

It's not so much a rumbling , more of a sharp knocking and the fact the engine was trying to stop leads me to beleive it's a big end, which is dissapointing as the engine has only done 102k and I only changed the gearbox a while ago.
