My trusted Mk6 1.6 TDCI fiesta has thrown up an engine light. It's the '!' rather than EML and reads 'engine system failure'.

This comes with a loss of power on wide open throttle and a refusal to rev above 2900. I understand this is temperature related and as such, isn't present first thing in the morning.

Waiting for an OBD scanner to arrive bit in the meantime, any thoughts?

DPF? This sounds very much like the issue we had on our previous 1.6 TDCI Focus. You can get a reconditioned one (baked out) for around £200-300.

How very odd. Our 1.6 tdci Focus threw the same message for the first time last week with the same symptoms. Got it home and scanned it but no fault codes and hasn’t gone wrong since. Ford garage couldn’t find anything wrong with it either.

I've had it scanned and code was P900* or something, can't recall. It's underboost-ing. Oddly though, I've managed to drive it all week and not get the light back unless I go wide-open throttle or above 2500rpm.

I don't believe this model has a DPF (55 plate). But cannot confirm.

Our 59 plate did this, I never got it code read, however the wife had filled it at Tescos...

It like yours was fine the following week, never filled it with supermarket fuel forctge remaining 18 months we had it.

it never returned after either.

Problem solved - turned out it was a pipe on the manifold side of the turbo. Tiny split underneath was opening on wide open throttle, causing loss of boost pressure.

New pipe = sorted
