Evening all

Recently got a late 2016 focus 1.0 ecoboost. The car is losing coolant every 400 miles, probably around 150ml. No signs of a leak at all.

The car has done 24k and ffsh.

Any ideas what could be causing the leak?

Ignore this at your peril!!

Seriously, there’s been a lot of noise surrounding ecoboosts and coolant loss leading to melted engines in some cases and I’d get it booked in pronto. (Although, the melted engines are usually due to a sudden loss of coolant - these engines run hot normally, so any sudden loss of coolant can have catastrophic consequences).

Being a 2016 car, it shouldn’t be the usual suspect of the degas hose (you should have the modified part already) but it can in some cases weep at the water pump causing coolant loss.

Keep a very close eye on your levels and if you notice the temp gauge spike, turn off immediately.

Don’t mean to scare you smile but you need to have this looked at sooner rather than later.

Thanks all

I've book the car in at the dealers. Interesting that my father has a similar car that is 8months older and doesn't lose any coolant at all.

I'll report back on the findings

Cheers

Mine leaked from the front cover seal, luckily it was still under warranty as they worked on it for two days. Lovely engine but relieved to have got rid.

Update.

The radiator was replaced due to a split fin. So far so good. Going to keep an eye on the coolant level every few days.
Great little car, shame ford haven't really got on top of the coolant issues.

On a side note, the service managed did say that's they have seen big mileage 1.0 ecoboost engines so it isn't all.doom and gloom.

Cheers

Might be a bit late on this thread but ...

Ford Focus 2013 1L Ecoboost
65000 miles

I noticed an unknown liquid on the left side of the engine bay yesterday. I was only under there as my horn packed in (corroded connector so easy fix). Then saw there was maybe an inch left in the bottom of the coolant reservoir, if that. Was definitely full at my MOT a couple of months back. Read all about the coolant leaks online and feared the worst as you do.

Took it to the garage and turned out to be a crack at the base of the coolant reservoir. £40 quick fix. Could have been a lot worse.

Worth a check for anyone who is struggling to find a source for the coolant leak before forking out hundreds at a garage.

Edit: temp gauge always reported fine and no engine lights on etc while the coolant was all but gone. Full Ford service history. So don't rely on the temp gauge before checking or getting it fixed
