i'm buying a n reg 4 door escort off one of the guys at work. the rear wheel arches need some attention, anyone got any good tips to dispose of the rust and to stop it coming back?
also the 1.4 needs some work as at the mo it sounds like a diesal lol. i'm not sure weather the engine is the z-tech or the one before??
i want to change the rear drums to disks and sort the suspention and fit anti roll bars to sort the handeling out..
any hints and tips would be great as this is my first car, i've done loads of engine, breaking and handling modds to sports bikes, and i've helped keep a few mk1 festers on the road a few years back

all help would be great...

Wow, now there's a project

The engine will be the 1400 PTE unit, thats basically a CVH with a black rocker cover , with regards to it sounding like a diesel...i take it the power unit has a top end rattle?

Common points would be tired valve lifters, sludged up oil pick up.

discs to drums, don't bother the drums are fine for the job, if you MUST do a conversion, have a look for an early (k plate or so) xr3i, cabrio or ghia si with the 130ps engine, these had discs from the off.
Again the higher power donor car will provide thicker front roll bar and rear bar.

Tin worm only knows one master, and thats the grinder, cut it out and weld in repair panels.

hope some of it helps.

Let me know how you get on with the suspension work, if its reasonable price and results wise I will do the same to mine!

Got the 1.6 already, if you are an enthusiastic driver (i.e. dont like the car lumbering up hills, like to be able to overtake easily) then it isnt powerful enough. Think I will be getting the 1.8 at some point over the summer, insurance permitting.
