After falling foul of the mods twice now here goes for the third and final time..

Why is a full leather interior in a Ford S Max 2010>2016 model such a rare option?

I'm not on about the half leather as found in the titanium x sports model, I'm referring to the full leather option which was available across the range.

You'd think with a car that's designed to be used as a family bus that leather would be a more popular option given how easy it is to clean v a cloth interior.

Is there any ford sales staff on here which can enlighten me as to why there are so few cars on the 2nd hand market with this option?

Was it stupidly expensive or not offered for a period of time?

Mods - if this gets removed, then it's goodbye from me.. This is not a wanted add but a genuine question..

Mods put this back in gg... There is no traffic on the Ford page.. Three responses in 24hrs does not make a forum.

I placed this thread in gg earlier for this reason

I think its just that if leather was an option it cost a disproportionate amount relative to the perceived benefit thus wasnt often ticked.

I’ve just stepped out of a 2014 Smax after close on 5yrs motoring.

I took it on as a lease car and then ended up buying it as it was offered below market value, then ran for nearly another year and sold for more than I bought it for.

To answer your question, leather didn’t appeal to me as it was just a cheap lease car which was going to get abused by my 3 children. If I wanted luxury I probably would have bought a premium brand. I think ford owners don’t give a fk and just want a reliable car.

If a lot where sold on PCP etc I doubt they would have had any options added on so if leather wasn’t standard it wasn’t added

I imagine they where quite often a buy from dealer stock kind of thing too, which means lots of standard spec ones.

Have you thought about buying one and getting a interior from eBay etc?

Leather is (or was) a relatively expensive option compared to to the purchase price of the car plus the car is seen as a 'family bus' so the first owners may have been wary of kids/dogs/prostitutes damaging it.

If originally leased then it can bump up the monthlies quite a bit as you're paying the full cost of the leather over 24/36 months. Similar with private financed cars, why pay extra per month for something that you'll exchange in 2/3 years time? I'd wager most people who buy new on finance simply go with the standard trim spec (zetec/titanium/whatever) and maybe add a few cheap options rather than blow thousands on the options list.

The option is so rare that there aren't any interiors for sale on eBay..

It's a more popular option in a galaxy as I've seen a few of these for sale but cant understand why its so rare in an S Max.

Interestingly, my friend has a 2010 Galaxy which does have full leather, but it's not heated

Now it's winter, he'd rather it had cloth!

My S Max has the leather/alcantara seats, and to be honest they are a much nicer seat.

Super rare as was around £1650 for full leather when you could get half leather on a titanium at no extra cost - hence not many people went for it. They do come up for sale but quite rare outside the sport or titanium x.

Much like early Bmw E90 3 series - full leather was around £2k option and hardly anyone took it on the lower spec / smaller engined models - over priced

I had a 2011 Titanium X Sport with the half leather / alcantara upholstery and it stood up remarkably well to 4 years of abuse from 3 small kids. It was easy to vac up all the usual crumbs and spills, and the kids seats didn't leave any marks despite being in place non stop for the entire ownership period.

I changed the car 2 years ago for the new shape (now strangely called the Titanium Sport with X Pack) which has standard leather. The whole cabin is better built and feels more expensive however the leather is no improvement - it is flat and hard and doesn't feel remotely luxurious and the booster seats (no car seats needed now) do mark the leather.

I'd recommend you go ahead with a Titanium X Sport with the leather / alcantara seats. It's a fantastic family car and drives well too.

It's not a bad car, but not the sort many buy with leather. It'll be a cheap family bus for kicking around in until the kids are older.

Why don’t you see leather in an Astra, Focus, Mondeo, Picasso etc?

Same reason.

You’ll find it in a Galaxy because they are popular with the taxi / airport transfer crowd.

That's a lot of of seats (7 individual ones. ..) needing cladding, making it a greater then average cost "for leather" in a car. This makes it even worse considering luxury was a distant consideration for the majority of the owners.

They actually make brilliant family cars, and drive far better than anything that tall has a right to. More practical, cheaper (to buy and run), and infinitely nicer to drive than the big SUVs that so many people flock to for family transport nowadays. The people I know who have them love the things.

The biggest issue for most people is the image. A Ford people carrier simply doesn't look as good on the drive, or in the office car park, as a German SUV.

V.
Correct, any decent driver who has spent anytime driving an Smax will tell you how great these are to drive, nothing at all like these big daft SUV's that people seem love, a good Smax is a good steer (as it should be with lots of it being Mondeo related).

Agreed - drove a colleague’s one because “you know where we are going, you fking drive!” and was suitably impressed. 2.0 TDCI.

I second the “family bus” logic, the half leather / alcantata trim has suffered 4.5 yrs of kids and tip runs and still looks decent.
In fact I prefer the alcantata for the seat base and back, it grips me better (when pressing on) and warms up quicker than the leather in my Subaru.
We’ve been so pleased with it we’re ordering another with other half’s car allowance (company lease) tit x 2.0tdci

New one has a massive power increase thanks to WLTP?
170bhp to 240bhp? Different engine or has it been twin turbo’d?
Thanks emissions peeps!
