Hi, my mondayo is failing to start I've run out of ideas.

When i try to start it it cranks for a few seconds then stops. I jumped it off my other car and it works fine. I had the battery, starter motor+ altenater checked at halfords and they recon its fine.

Next thought was glow plugs but i was under the impresion the car would start eventualy with dodgy glow plugs especially when over 0 degrees.

Next thought was that there could be a short draining the battery as ive resently had to clean out the indecator stalk to stop the indecators coming on while parked. I got the mutlimeter across the positive terminal to the ground and theres no voltage when locked.11-ish V when unlocked which i assume is what it should be.

Tonight i noticed the head lights come on when i try and crank the engine which is odd as they were turned of ...

Any ideas would be apriciated.

Thanks

finlo

Knackered batterys can give rise to all sorts of weird electrical problems.

If the headlights are lighting up when cranking, then it could be the earth to the engine block is high resistance and it's finding an earth via the lighting circuit.

Connect a multimeter (DC volts), positive lead on +ve terminal on battery and negative lead on the starter motor main feed. Crank the engine and note the voltage reading, you should expect max of 0.5v.

Repeat the test between the -ve terminal on battery and starter motor main body. You should again expect to see 0.5v max.

I would also question why it starts ok when you jump start it with a second battery. I would measure the min voltage when cranking once you know the starter motor wiring is ok.
