I have an 08 Ford Focus 1.6 Zetec and I have had a few issues with it.

First of all, an engine malfunction notification flashes up with reduced acceleration. It can happen when I'm driving, idling the car or even when the ignition is switched on. If the warning shows when the engine has not been switched on, the car won't start at all. No codes show up for this fault, even when tested with 3 different machines repeatedly. This may be unrelated, but I've had a new flexi installed, a new cat converter, welding work done to fix a previous mechanics mistake, pistons have been replaced as well as an issue with the handbrake, power steering pump, a brake fluid leak, and new brakes - all of which have not amended the engine malfunction. It seems to be something to do with the dash cluster as hitting the dash clears the warning entirely for a few days... It may be a loose wire or connections that need to be re-soldered, but I've had a few opinions and I'd rather have some idea about what could be wrong.

I have also found a leak underneath the car. It doesn't seem to be coolant (although I was completely dry last week) as the level has not moved, and is black in colour, though this doesn't really help when it could be due to the fluid running through the systems and collecting dirt, etc. Upon looking underneath the car, it seems to be dripping from the bottom of the fan/timing belt, so I'm not sure if it could be power steering fluid as I have had issues with heavy steering in the past few months.

If anybody can provide any advice at all, I'd greatly appreciate it.

As an ex-Ford tech, I can tell you that the first problem will be dry joints in the instrument cluster. It's the master module for the immobilizer which is why when it acts up, you can't start the engine. Very common, and numerous companies such as ECU Testing or BBA Reman can repair.
