Ford Ka high petrol usage and a whiff of petrol..

Hi All!
I'm a first time poster but long time lurker!
So, I have a Ford Ka (the new shape), 2009, 118500 miles. Recently I've noticed a whiff of petrol inside the car, and if you sniff at the air vents when the engine is running (and has been for a couple of minutes) there is a definite smell coming from them. The petrol use has also increased (approx 40 miles per 1/4 tank, was around 80 before). There is no noticeable leak from anywhere we can see, the journey's haven't changed, no increase in traffic etc. There is some kind of drip residue on the drive but this has been there for a while (around 1 year) and the garage that has looked after it has never mentioned anything.
The gear linkage did pop-off shortly after having the thermostat housing and mounts replaced last year, but the fuel issue has been the last 4/5 weeks.
Any ideas? As you can imagine the car is really not worth spending a fortune on, but if I could keep it going a little longer that would be great!
