It's got 61200 miles on it and therefore out of warranty.
Well there's one thing you hadn't told us. The car is 2 years old(maybe less) and only 1200 miles over, so assuming it has been properly serviced from new It would be poor customer relations for Ford not to make a goodwill gesture.

It's been serviced as per the schedule (every 12 500 miles). What I find strange (apart from the cost), is the fact the radio/CD would stop when all it needed was a "software update". PCs, tablets, phones etc don't stop when an update is required. The car is 2 years old(maybe less) and only 1200 miles over, so assuming it has been properly serviced from new It would be poor customer relations for Ford not to make a goodwill gesture.

A good point.Who knows what they have actually done....but £216 for a "software update" is daylight robbery/extortion.
I still say Ford should have covered the cost under the circumstances. It really is extremely poor!!
If it was your own car then I would be contacting Ford Customer Relations Centre.
