I'm trying to identify the spec and original donor for the engine in my kit car.

The engine is in situ and I cannot see (or feel) an engine number stamped on the raised flat rectangular area (as would be expected).

The casting numbers are as follows:
205 (so obviously a later Pinto)
23F88
85HM6115BB (casting presumably designed in 1985)

Can anyone help me decode the latter two casting numbers?

It was fitted as a replacement unit in 1998 costing £350 but I don't know the registration or model of the donor though I suspect it was a 2.0 injected Sierra. I understand it has an unleaded head and 2.1 conversion. I assume this is using 2.8 Cologne pistons.and standard injection head from a 2.0i Sierra - which would explain the £350 cost

It would be useful to know the standard specs and origin should I wish to further tune the unit (currently running a 4-2-1 tubular exhaust manifold and suitably jetted 38DGAS Weber but standard camshaft.

Thanks

I'll post my own findings here for the benefit of others who may look to decipher these codes for themselves in future and happen upon this thread via a search engine:

23F88 - Means the block was cast on the 23rd of June 1988 (A=Jan, B-Feb etc). This would make this unit one of the last injection SOHC Pintos manufactured for the Sierra before being superseded by the DOHC engine.

This forum is a bit quiet for advice on the oily bits of old Fords!
