My Brother has a Mk 3 Mondeo which starts and runs normally for most of the time, but whenever the engine is put under a heavier load, e.g accelerating hard, or climbing a steep hill, the engine begins to stutter and miss. This is instantly cured by dropping down to the next lower gear, and running on increase revs, at which point the engine runs normally again, All the usual suspects have been checked, including plugs, and leads etc, but my brother has been having some difficulty in working out what is going wrong. There is no engine management warning light coming up on the dash when it stutters, and the use of a code reader, has not revealed a possible fault either. Has anyone else out there experienced a similar problem, and if so any advice on what they did to rectify the problem (if indeed they could) would be welcome.

Useful to know what engine it is. I'd a 1.8 petrol and solved this by changing the coil pack and leads (I figured I'd do both at once). Cost me £50 from Euro car parts after I got discount from them and took about 20 mins to do. But it does sound like a misfire from what you described. May be something totally different, but cheap fix if this is the problem.

Thank you for your reply. The car is a 2 litre Duratec. I will pass on your comments to my Brother, as something he might try, to cure the problem with his engine. I will let you know the outcome, but thank you for taking the time to offer your advice.

I may be wrong but I think the 1.8 and 2.0 Duratec engines take the same coil pack. It's easy to swap. IIRC 4 blots hold it in place and then just unplug it, swap and reconnect, Just be sure to note which plug goes where!

Just a note to say that my Brother changed the coil pack on his Mondeo, and it now works perfectly, so thank you for the replies to my post. He said that it was important to make sure that he got exactly the right pack for his particular car, because some have different pattern programs although externally they all look the same, and are fitted in exactly the same way. Not even expensive to replace, so he is very happy with the outcome. Thanks again for you comments.
