I'm a month or so away from getting my new Ford Kuga 150 hp petrol

I see they also do a 120 HP one and a 182 HP one, the site is a bit short on details so I don't know if it's just the same engine chipped to different levels or what, I know that this is common amongst diesels offering the same engine but in different states of tune, is this the case here? I'm guessing so as bluefin do a remap to 197 HP

Yeah, all 3x petrol versions are based on the 1.5 Ecoboost 4 cylinder; which is basically an updated member of the "Sigma" family of engines. The 120 and 150hp versions are 2wd and the 180hp model is AWD.

To be blunt it doesn't really matter because you have already made your choice.

umm yes I know, I'm happy with it, was just wondering if the engines were different or just the same old tweaked a bit.

Over here in Oz we have the 2.0L Ecoboost the same as the Focus ST.
Nice engine but coupled with the crap 6 speed auto, turns it from being a great car into an average car.

Could be different for the Kuga, but the 120 is the 3cyl engine in the Focus line up.
It is different for the Kuga, I see them every single day.

Fair do's.... nice of Ford to make it non-confusing by using different power outputs from the focus.... oh no, wait hehe
The difference is the torque; the 1.5 4-cylinder makes 177 ft-lbs compared to the 1.0 3-cylinder's 125 ft-lbs. The 3 pot motor works well in the Focus, but there's simply too much lard in the Kuga for it to cope with.

I might have gone for the 180 but (in the Kuga at least) you can only get it with awd & auto box, and a fair bit worse on fuel, it might have been interesting to see how it would have been with 2wd and manual

They will sell you a Mondeo Estate with the 125ps 1.0 EB triple here in NL.

Can you buy that in the UK?
Yeah you can, although a Mondeo estate is still around 100 or so kg lighter than a Kuga.

the awd autobox 180 hp kuga is also slower than the 150, must be demands of the auto box and 4wd

2wd titanium is 1504 kg kerbweight

4wd one is 1611 kg

link here https://www.carleasingmadesimple.com/data/ford/kug...

and 1litre ecoboost mondeo is 1401 kg

Yeah the AWD saps a fair bit of power, the transmission not so much, as it's a twin clutch affair like a DSG. I'd never own anything with a PowerShift box fitted though, I've seen far too many problems with them .

I found some spec details (albeit Ford Escape which is the US name)

http://www.automobile-catalog.com/car/2017/2409500...

Looks like DOHC with fords version of Vtech, plus a turbo bolted on, not bad at all, especially with the right tune you can get pretty much 200 BHP out of a 1.5 litre. My current Honda Jazz 1.33 litre gets 99 BHP

The 1.5 litre volume is an honest one too, unlike my 1333cc (1.4) at 1499cc (1.5)

It's not quite like Vtec, Honda's system utilises a secondary camshaft with alters both duration and valve lift, Ford's VCT system purely adjusts camshaft timing.

As I said earlier, it's related to the Sigma series of engines, so closely related to the old Zetec motors. The addition of the turbo aids power and efficiency, and the 1499cc capacity makes it tax friendly for many markets where 1500cc+ engines are taxed more heavily.

Yes one of the many reviews I read said that China in particular has a 1500 cc tax break limit, I guess considering the prospective size of that market that Ford were wise to do that.
