Can someone answer me this:

Are the exhaust crackles, pops and bangs in sport mode artificial or real?

I have not driven one (yet) however when I first test drove the 2013 ST I was horrified to discover that engine noise is artificially pumped into the cabin via the speakers! Yuk.

I had a mark 2 ST Mountune and mark 2 RS and those noises were real.

Thanks in advance.

I guess it depends what you mean by "real".

Are they programmed in? More than likely. Could it run without making the noise? More than likely.

Real would be like my old 996 C4S that on the overrun made a noise bang and crackle. Artificial would be like the Cliosport that had an option to make it sound like a GTR.

Mind you the RS5 from 2010 used to spit a little fuel into the exhaust on gear change so there was a little bang. That is artificial to me.

In that case probably every new (mianstream) car on sale today is what you would call artifcial smile

But to be clear, in your terms real as the sound is from the exhaust.

yes they are real, mine pops and bangs in normal drive mode aswell, its just easier to get it to pop and bang in sport mode.

Always wondered....how much do these bangs cost? Given the bang is effectively overrun and the car does 20mpg...they are what...20p each? lol

Yes I know it is un-burnt fuel, but that doesnt arrive in the exhaust without it being mapped to do so by adding a little fuel to the overrun.

And besides...my comment was tongue in cheek!

Most performance car sounds are "enhanced" to make them sound more noisy than they have to be, whether that be flaps in the exhaust, extra fuel or speaker sound, the latter of which is indeed the weakest.

Also in the 2 cars you mention there was also a pipe (sound symposer) that brought extra noise into the cabin.

If you watch the 'Making of the MK3 RS' videos Ford released then you see the engineers discussing how to deliberately 'reduce the efficiency of the car' to create the pops and bangs and then feed that sound in to the cabin via sound symposers. So it is deliberately engineered, whether that makes it artificial or real would be up to your taste I guess.

My Focus ST, I removed the symposer pipe to fit better inlet hoses for more boost and it still had cabin sound from the engine.
