Selecting first or reverse in a 2011 Mondeo Zetec Diesel TDCI is problematic to say the least with strong resistance experienced. The problem does not exist however if gear is selected with the engine off (ie if parked etc). Once the car is started, whether the engine is warm or cold, that's when gear selection is a problem.
Has anyone experienced a similar issue or can someone advise if this is a common problem? Thanks in advance.

You need a new DMF.

You need a new DMF.
Thanks for this, but what makes you think it is the DMF? Gear selection is all other gears, even when warm is absolutely fine.

My '57 Focus ST has started doing this too.. just feels a little resistance in changing gear, and now and again when trying to park it becomes really difficult to select first or reverse..

What's the DMF?

Dual Mass Flywheel and = big job I believe :-(

Yes, it feels as if the clutch isn't fully disengaging when I change gear. Most of the time it's fairly ok.. but if I'm trying to park, and it takes a bit of shunting..the gear selection starts becoming difficult. Like you said though, when the engine is switched off..the gear change is perfect. I was also wondering if it was the brake/clutch master cylinder failing?

I'm not sure as not mechanically gifted, lol. Will get mine looked at sometime in the fairly near future and see what they say :-)

I know it's a while back but did you get sorted with the 1st & reverse gear issues?

Our 04 2ltr petrol Mondeo has had these issues pretty much from purchase but it has got progressively worse, ie more often than not, we have to switch the engine off to get either 1st or reverse gear. It still drives a treat, all-be-it it does now feel its age, and it's only just passed its MOT with flying colours but the gear issue has now made us lose the will to live!

Any help/advice greatfully received so thanks in advance.

I had asked the local dealer to contact Ford UK to check if it was a known problem, but they never came back to me. In the meantime I saw an opportunity to change the car to something I had been after for a while to went with that. Prior to that I used an independent mechanic who was alarmed that the Ford dealer had casually stated that it was a gearbox issue as it was nothing of the sort. From memory I think it was actually clutch related and I can’t state exactly what, but I could do some digging for you if that would help?

Hi - if you could do some digging, that would be great thank you. Having had the hydrolic oil changed yesterday, to no avail, the mechanic then went straight for 'you need a new clutch and flywheel, which will cost £800'!! The car's not even worth that but has only just passed it's MOT and been serviced and it's been a trusty old banger and would like to run it into the ground if possible.

I asked my mechanic and he can't remember, but I'm sure I ended up putting a new clutch in the car, which solved the issue. Something makes me think there was a 'fork' twisted or something like that.
It does get to the, is it cost effective to fix it etc

Thanks for doing some digging and it does correlate with what our trusted mechanic said, all-be-it he didn't offer any explanation, eg I did this test or that test (if there is a definitive test even)! What worries me is, after reading a LOT of forums on this specific topic, ie trouble getting 1st & reverse gear when the engine's cold, there are quite a few that state they had a new clutch fitted but the problem remained......oh, what to do?!!
