Focus Keyless Entry Fob Not Working

Hi. I have a 2011 Focus Titanium X with keyless entry. Car was in the garage and when I went to collect the mechanic said the battery in the fob was dying - no problem, spare and spare battery at home. The car battery was also running very low he said - he'd left the car running before I arrived. Got home, resolved to fix fob next time I wanted to use the car. This morning - dead as a dodo. Spare fob dead as a dodo. And no spare battery after all. Took wife's car and have batteries. Replaced in both fobs - car still won't respond, so I'm wondering if the car battery has drained since the day before yesterday (granted, its not been used more than twice a week lately).

Dismantle the key fob to get the metal door opening thing out - car door won't open with it! Checked I was doing the right thing by looking at vids online and the damn door should open - surely even if the main battery has gone flat?

Anyone any ideas? Surely even if the main battery is dead I should be able to get into the car...

Ironically keyless entry is the one feature of this car I thought "what happens when that goes wrong?" when I bought it...

Called the AA man in the end - seems the metal key thing needed more purchase in the lock than I could give it...(a bit embarrassing given I'm 6 ft 2 and not exactly a weed). And the car battery was flat, with the charging monitoring not working correctly. Disconnected and reconnected, charged the battery and it seems to now be holding a charge fine.
