which ford fiesta ?
Discussion
Hi folks just looking for some advice on which would be the best ford fiesta in terms of best engine and any faults to look out for.
looking for a small car just for short journeys and have close to settled on the ford fiesta. Are any of the engines particularly better than the others or is the diesel engine a better bet than the petrol ? Wouldnt be doing a whole lot of motorways and the likes so not against the smaller engine versions.
Don't really know anything about the fiestas and so would appreciate any advice. Looking for one maybe 2 years old.
Thanks everyone and appreciate the help.
all the best,
jamie

Mrs CC has a 1.6 TDCi, about 90bhp I think. Needed it due to doing 70 miles a day. It comfortably does 65mpg (and she can be a bit heavy footed ). Not particularly quick, but perfectly acceptable.
However... she's recently changed jobs, so a lot less travelling. We'll be looking to trade it in at some point and go for a petrol. If you're not doing a lot of miles then it's no contest, the petrol's are a bit more refined and make a lot more sense.
I've also driven both the 1.0 Ecoboost (125bhp) and the 1.25 n/a petrol (about 80bhp). The 1.0 Ecoboost is a nice car, good fun engine, and you should be able to get 40+ mpg. Don't rule out the 1.25, of course it is slower than the Ecoboost, but I found it's still a fun car, you just have to work the engine a bit more. If you're after "a car" to get you from A to B, it has the advantage of being cheaper to buy, and should be cheaper to run and maintain (a simpler car with less things to go wrong).
My advise would be to test drive both petrol's and then make up your mind.

Mrs Podie has an ST, but I recently dropped it in for service and got a 1.0 Ecoboost - and was pleasantly surprised.
If it's within budget, have a look at the Zetec S version, or "ST-line" as they're now calling it, as it has a bit more poke (125bhp I think)

You can get the 140bhp engine in any of the ST-Line/Red/Black versions...
I believe that can still be given the Mountune treatment as well, so probably between 160-170bhp with full manufacturers warranty
I've also seen a couple of places which claim they can take it up to 220bhp+
Afraid that the mountune MR165 conversion isn't Ford warranty friendly. The 140 engine hits 150bhp on overboost, and those figures may be a little conservative. Also pretty sure that this engine spec is available on other fiesta types now as well.I believe that can still be given the Mountune treatment as well, so probably between 160-170bhp with full manufacturers warranty

There are conversions that take it to over 200bhp, and there is now talk of the next ST using this engine.
Me and my son run a 13 plate 125 Ecoboost as our daily. Its refined enough to meet our day to day and fun.
The car was bought from new and now has 80k on the clock. The standard week now consists of a 287mile trike (mainly motorways) on a Sunday night followed by either 4/5 daily commutes of 40 miles on A/B roads and finally a return 287. The car is fun frugal 51/55mpg car when sitting at NSL's.
Do you really need the extra mpg?
