Hi.
I have a diesel mk3 estate and have owned it about 2 years. From day one it's always run slightly lumpy when cruising on motorways at around 2,000rpm (where turbo is about to kick in). 2 months ago the turbo went completely; I've had a 2nd hand turbo refitted, after which it ran back to how it was again. Since then the lumpiness has gradually got worse and is very smoky under boost (which to be honest it always was...). Runs absolutely fine with foot down accelerating.
Air filter and fuel filter have been changed (both within last 2 weeks). Since fitting the fuel filter, it ran fine for about 30 miles and now is running worse than ever - intermittently! - but now even on tickover which it wasn't before.
It doesn't appear to be fully temperature related as it can be bad on tickover now when cold - but generally lumpiness gets worse when it gets up to normal running temperatures.
Not using any more oil than it ever has done (always burnt a bit to be fair).
I'm hoping maybe an intercooler pipe or EGR valve problem... rather than piston rings or head gasket?? (No fuel in water or water in the oil) - anyone any ideas please?! Car has done 170k... could this be the death of it?

It could be leaky injectors I suppose. At 170k they are going to be pretty worn, and would give smoky running and lumpy power, especially when cold. Probably worth looking up a local diesel engine specialist and asking their opinion.
