Which would you rather have and why?

Which is the better investment?

I find it interesting - a hobby that costs you nothing, what's not to like? Better than buying a new m3 and losing £20k!

Ignore the money side of things then if it doesn't interest you, which do you prefer?

I'm in the Sierra camp as its a little more 'raw' and rare but the escort has a certain appeal

I had a 3dr from 1990 to 2003. If I could own any Cosworth now it would be the RS500. I'd choose buy to lets for investments.

Yes, as an investment an RS500 in spankingly original condition. Preferably with the fog lamps in the boot. But that would be a huge shame, they were designed to be driven, not stand around under a plastic cover in an air conditioned garage.

Original would be a bit dull. Sensibly modified is what I'd have.

It would see some track days too.

Escort....it has a bigger rear spoiler.

If I bought another one,I wouldn't drive it as the AA will stop taking my calls.

As an investment, don't think you can split them, both can command insane prices if the mileage is low enough.

The RS500 is in another league to the "standard" cars.

I drove both back to back today.

A 3dr cosworth and a big turbo escort.

The Sierra is lower and longer and imho is better to drive - steering feel is great and more responsive. Feels more special but is also noticeable older and feels older.

The escort appears shorter but more exciting in a weird way - far more grip and great steering feel compared to a modern car. Could still be driven as a daily and feels modern enough to do long journeys.

Overall I think both are great and I'd probably choose the Sierra - seems to get more respect from road users.

If you are talking about a standard Sierra Cosworth ie not a 500 and the Escos I'd have the Escort every time, the Sierra is quite a big car in comparison. Also in the wet on 205 tyres the 2wd traction on boost was laughable.

BTW...I owned my Escort for 8 years but have never driven a Sierra Cos of any kind.

I only ever considered owning an Escort as I don't think a Sierra would go into my pokey little garage.

Great in their day but massively overpriced for what you get now. Both are safe places for money though as they'll not drop in price but upkeep etc is still required and as such cancels out some of the money they may increase by.

Depends what you mean by "what you get". Certainly they are out accelerated by diesel barges and don't have all the toys, but if you want people to wave and smile, talk to you and generally be a popular guy, then it is probably a better investment than pretty much any recent car.

I imagine the Escort Cosworth is the same width as the Sierra, they only shortened the Sierra Cosworth floorpan for the Escort didn't they? No width reduction. I know my XR4x4 feels tiny next to things like the MINI and all the other modern "small" cars, and relatively speaking it is so low that it almost looks like a sports car. While at the same time it seems to have a much larger boot space and legroom for everyone.

The Sierra. Probably.

I own a three-door and a rear-wheel-drive Sapphire. I've never owned a 4x4 Cosworth of any description, but I still think about buying an Escort with aero deletion and cloth trim. Maybe one day.

Your assessment of the cars is spot on - the Sierra is nicer to drive. It's sharper, livelier and rattlier than the Escort. I guess the Escort's steering feel may be better than most modern cars, but it's dead compared to the Sierra's. The Escort, to me, feels much heavier than the weight difference would suggest.

Of course, the nicest to drive of all Cosworths is the RWD Sapphire...

Maybe by a 4.0 diesel barge but unlikely by any other diesels.

For me it would be the Escort all day every day. It looks like a rally car out of the box.
