Mondeo 2.0 TDCI 140bhp....Hunting for fuel?

Hi All,
Wondering if any Ford Techs on here who might be able to help.
My wife's cousin owns a Ford Mondeo 2.0 TDCi (140bhp) on a '08 plate. For a few months now, he has been having some issues with it and tonight I drove it to see what he was experiencing.
On driving the car for a while, at a constant throttle you then come up to the lights for example and engine noise is noticably louder (like a throaty noise) and as you set off again, whilst cruising at say 30mph the car begins to judder and feels very lumpy - the only way to get rid of this is to either, change gear for a bit, go a bit slower or faster using the throttle. The car is sometimes very jumpy around car parks if being on a decent run.
After speaking to him, he said it is very noticeable when you've had the throttle in a constant position for a while, if you are going up/down hills changing speed you cannot feel it.
It has been on a few diagnostics with no issues found, even the sensors reset but the issue persists. The cars DPF apparently is in full working order according to a local Ford garage. He is really worried at throwing money at it with no repair. He was advised by a 'so called friend' that it was the Fuel Pressure Regulator but all of sudden bumped price up by £250 so he has his doubts.
Can anyone help shed any light?
Thanks

I have the same car and joined up here to find out why mine has been playing up. It would cut out approaching junctions and stuff. Always when slowing down to a stop. Sometimes had a dip in power in 3rd gear as well. Tried a new fuel filter, but no joy. This has been a random issue for the 2 years I've had the car, but it was very rare. Recently though, it was getting much more frequent. Garages had no clue as no codes were showing. Then yesterday, stopped at traffic lights, a st load of smoke just was everywhere. Moved off and it was fine again. Stopped again and more smoke. Went straight to a garage and they booked it in for this morning. Turns out a bolt at the turbo had come loose and was leaking oil. They tightened it up and said just to run it and see if it's ok. I went a little run about 10 miles to see what would happen. No smoke and it didn't cut out once either. It should have cut out 2 or 3 times on a run like that. Don't want to count my chickens, but all seems well so far. Going on a big run tomorrow, so will let you know how that goes.
If I have learned one thing about my car recently, there can be so many answers to a similar issue that I have had. I expected the worst big time (blue smoke and cutting out), but could be as simple as a loose bolt. So, don't fret and freak out like I did. I was worrying that the garage bill would be massive and I wouldn't be able to afford it. Went to pick up the car and all they charged was £0. They couldn't promise it was sorted and if the issue continued, they would have to strip it down and that would cost. Fair enough, but I think I dodged a bullet on this one. Sorry for going on a bit, but this is for people like me that freak out and expect the worst. The best sign for me during all the issues was that the car kept running smooth and had no problems with pulling power. OK, it cut out randomly at junctions and whatever, but it fired up right away and went normally.
Hopefully I've gave some insight to someone in a similar position. After all my research on forums and stuff, I came across similar issues. I didn't come across a loose bolt on the turbo as a diagnosis. I did the new fuel filter and asked ford about an ECU software upgrage. They wanted £80 to check, so got told where to go. So, stay calm and get it checked out before freaking. My heart seriously vouches for this

Update:
Went for a drive today, covering 30ish miles. Started cutting out again and just wanted to die at low revs in 3rd and 4th gear. Stopped at lights and started seeing smoke again, but not as bad and hasn't happened since. Next option is get garage to strip it down and investigate more, which is going to start costing money with no guarentees on finding the actual problem. I'm not willing to do that. So, will just keep running it until it dies completely and just give it back. No car is worth this amount of crap and expense.

Try blanking the egr off first.
The RAC woman that towed the car a couple of weeks ago said that. I would be happy to do that if I knew it would cure the problem. But, after my local garage said there was a loose bolt on the turbo and tightened it up, then it running fine for 2 days, then going bad again, I don't think the EGR is the problem.I just went to the shop in it there. A half mile trip at most. I went the long way round and done about 6/7 miles. Normally I wouldn't take it over 3000rpm, as I had a bit of clutch slip about 6 months ago when I went above that. Keeping it below that since, it has been fine. Just there though, I decided to drive it like I stole it on the quiet roads. Red lined it big time and had it up to 120mph. Not one single issue on the whole journey. Never missed a beat. I really wish I was a mechanic to solve it, because it has my head melted.

Google what's involved. It's a simple/cheap fix if it IS the issue. If not then you haven't wasted loadsadosh.
Fair point, will look into it and see where it goes. I know Ford said about £300 + labour, so they can go.....! I'll hopefully get it off over the weekend and give it a good scrub. If that fails, I'll blank it off. If that fails, then I'm going to have so much fun driving it like I stole it BadFord2008 said:

So, would you suggest blanking it off instead of trying to clean it?Centurion07 said:
Yep. No point wasting time and effort cleaning it if that's not the problem. Far quicker and easier to just blank it off to test. If that seems to work maybe clean it then and see if that does it. Or just leave it blanked off and the warning light on the dash.
What warning light? I've already got engine management light coming on for lambda sensor. Got a broken wire on one. Keep clearing it and it stays off for a while, but funnily enough, when I hammered the car a bit tonight, it came on again. Will it just be the same as that?Centurion07 said:
It will be the information warning light, not the EML. If it comes on due to blanking the egr, it will stay on unless you clear it but will just come back again. Small price to pay though.
If blanking it works then you could try cleaning it which might fix the problem, or replace it.
Thanks mate. I appreciate your help. At least I now have something to go on. Nothing to lose and all that. You obviously don't work for Ford as you would be charging me £78 already If blanking it works then you could try cleaning it which might fix the problem, or replace it.
