Got home last night from my 25 mile journey home on the M25 and the cooling fan was on which was unusual (although the M25 was it's usual stop/start but no worse than normal).

I had no warning lights, and the temperature gauge was fine. Checked the coolant and this was a little low so topped it up. Oil was fine.

The fan was really loud and then after a few minutes it quietened down although it was still on. Does the Fiesta have a 2 stage fan and as such it was on the high setting initially and then went down to the low setting?

It's pretty normal my dads b max does it every so often. Some say it's if you stop while it's trying to do a dpf regen whether that's correct or not I don't know.

Did you have the aircon switched on ?

My daughters 1.6 tdci zetec s (2010) automatically switches on the cooling fan when aircon is on . Even if the car is not up to temperature engine wise

I took it to main dealer to check and reply was....
yes we know about this we think it's a stupid idea as well !!!

Gotta force air through the aircons heat exchanger otherwise it will not be hugely effective. Makes sense to me!

Fiestas have a dual stage fan. You may also find it comes on if the car is doing a DPF burn. Had mine do this the other day, AC was not on.
