S Max 2.5t Petrol HUWA Engine

My SMax has a strange noise coming from the engine. The noise moves between cylinders 1&3 predominantly and is most evident at 1-2k revs. As it's hard to locate the exact source of the noise, there is a possibility it's coming from the lower end.
Having exhausted the obvious without stripping the engine, we are looking at an engine replacement but it's becoming apparent that they are not abundant! The Focus ST is a slightly different engine.......
Does anyone have experience of swapping the ST engine or another Volvo engine such as the V70? Any suggestions of engine exchanges or companies in the South that rebuild and have a renowned reputation?
It was suggested that we look at the Variable Valve Timing Pulleys but again high cost with no certainty that it's the problem.

Have a Google for engine remanufacturers? They will strip and rebuild an engine, replacing any necessary parts. Cheaper than a replacement engine, and will be warrantied.
